2023 REPORT

Sat 12th August, Moira Manager: Martin

Two late dropouts left us with a field of 10, divided into two blocks of 5, with each player playing all the players from the other block, giving the benefit of no sit-outs.

The Block A winner was Colin Spencer (Downham) on 4 wins out of 5, with runner-up Jon Carrington (Broadwas) on 3 wins, +7 hoop difference, finishing just ahead of Edwin Bone (Eynsham, 3 wins, +4).

Andy Sherwood (Ashby) was the runaway winner of Block B on 5 wins out of 5. Next came three players on 2 wins: David Brammer (Branston, +3) qualifying for the semi-final ahead of Richard Sanville (Ashby, hoop diff 0) and defending champion Simon Draper (Norwich, hoop diff -3).

In the semi-finals, Jon won 7-4 against Colin, and Andy won 7-3 against David.

Jon saved his best shots for the final, with an impressive 7-2 win against in-form Andy, overturning the result of their game at the block stage (7-6 to Andy).

Edwin won one of Martin’s mystery prizes for a consolation game win against Simon. Edwin also won the prize for the most games going to the 13th hoop (4 out of 5 at the block stage).

Winner: Jon Carrington (Broadwas)
Runner-up: Andy Sherwood (Ashby)

2022 REPORT

Sat 13th August, Moira

Our annual GC B-Level and C-Level tournaments took place right in the middle of a four-day August heatwave, and consequently all of the lawns were really fast.

The B-Level (GC handicaps 3+) featured a full field of 12 players. Simon Draper (Norwich) was the overall winner, winning 7-5 against Stephanie White (Long Eaton) in the final. Judith Rowe and Richard Sanville from Ashby also competed, Judith beating Pauline Donner in a consolation game to win a new Moira cricket-ball trophy.

Sat 14th August, Moira

After a couple of late withdrawals, including one early on the day of the competition, the B-Level on the Saturday was reduced to just five players, so Martin had to re-jig the format so everyone now played two games against each of the other players. In the end it worked

Twelve players from as far north as Edinburgh, and as far south as Leighton Buzzard, competed at Moira for our annual B-Level GC tournament on a fine dry Saturday following a very wet Friday. We had seven rounds of play, after which the clear winner was local player Jane Tewson with an impressive 7 wins out of 7. Jane has had a very successful year, also winning the Leighton Linslade GC B-Level event in June, and we wish her well in the national final in September.

2nd: Pauline Donner (Woodhall Spa) 6 wins

Twelve players in the handicap range 3 to 8 contested our second annual B-Level GC competition at Moira.  As well as four Ashby players we had entrants from a wide area ranging from Yorkshire to the Thames valley.  The winner of this one-day competition was David Widdison of Bishop Monkton (Yorks).  Runner-up was Mike Bilton of Richmond Park (Lincs) and in third place was Ashby player Mick Haytack.  The winner qualifies for the national B-Level final.  Thanks are due to Jenny for catering and Martin for organising the event and managing to bring the tournament to a conclusion just before the heaviest of the showers arrived.

2014 REPORT

Sat 23rd Aug  Report by Martin

For the first time Ashby hosted a ‘B’ Level Golf Croquet tournament open to Croquet Association members from around the country in the GC handicap range 3 to 8. This is part of a national series of ‘B’ Level tournaments held over the course of the season, and the winner of each tournament progresses to a national final in October.

Here are the results of our B level tournament: 1st Chris Jackson (Long Eaton and Nottingham); 2nd Mick Haytack (Ashby); 3rd Kath Wright (Long Eaton and Nottingham); 4th Les Heard (Northampton).

We had a pleasant day with the ideal number of 12 competitors, travelling from as far as Fylde and High Wycombe.  All games were fairly equal and competitive.  The consolation doubles match (for wine) was fiercely contested and was won by Jean Ball (Leighton-Linslade) and John Hansen (Sapcote).

The winner of the B level received a framed print of a croquet scene from Hurlingham which turned out to be a very acceptable prize.
