Mick wins the inaugural Derek Buxton Trophy

Played on Sat 7th July. Manager/Reporter: Arthur

Four players contested the inaugural Derek Buxton Trophy on another roasting hot day. This is our internal 18-point level-play advanced AC competition, previously known as the Shakespeare Cup. We started early so as to finish before England’s World Cup quarter-final game against Sweden. All the games were completed within the two-hour time limit, averaging 1.5 hours in spite of the difficult conditions, and everyone won at least one game. Mick emerged the winner after playing very well in his last game to comprehensively beat Arthur. Derek also won his last game against Richard, and fittingly presented the eponymous trophy to Mick.

Results: Arthur 18–2 Derek (duration 70 min); Mick 10–18 Richard (100 min); Mick 18–5 Derek (80 min); Arthur 18–3 Richard (100 min); Arthur 3–18 Mick (60 min); Richard 10–18 Derek (115 min).

Winner: Mick Haytack.  Runner-up: Arthur Rowe

Jayne Stevens wins the National Forest GC

June 30th & July 1st

After a couple of late withdrawals from the competition, twelve players contested our 8th annual National Forest GC tournament which was won by Jayne Stevens from Northampton, beating Ashby’s Tim King 7-4, 2-7, 7-6 in the final.

Ray reports:

Following a long spell of scorchingly hot weather the lawns had suffered and playing conditions were challenging. On Saturday, in a “qualifying Swiss” each player had six games. The manager’s decision to play quarter finals, coupled with the overnight withdrawal, on health grounds, of David Bell rendered a consolation event impractical and left three competitors with no further involvement in the competition. Interestingly all six of Jayne Stevens’ qualifying Swiss opponents were also quarter finalists.

The winning quarter finalists, who fortunately had each won in two straight games, produced a semi-final of Tim King vs Richard Brooks, which Tim won, with relative ease, 7-3,7-5 and a semi-final in which the two Northampton players Jayne Stevens and Michael Hills had a lengthy three-game battle, resolved by Jayne winning 7-4 in the final game.

The final between Tim and Jayne had an inevitably late start, then went all the way to the thirteenth hoop of the third game. Jayne emerged as the worthy winner. For her it had been a long and tiring day – but clearly worthwhile. The photograph was taken by Richard Sanville, who had stayed to see the presentation.

The happy finalists (and Ascot Cup qualifiers) Tim King (tournament manager) and Jayne Stevens (winner)

Mick wins the Veterans’ GC Tournament at Moira

Played on Mon 4th June. Report by Eileen

Twelve players took part in this level-play East Midlands tournament. The handicaps ranged from 1 to 10.  The winner was Mick Haytack of Ashby C.C. with Chris Jackson of Long Eaton Park C.C. a very close second. Jenny provided a delicious lunch and tea with drinks and biscuits available all day.  The weather was warm but overcast.

Ashby B team start the season with two league wins

The Ashby B Golf Croquet team have got their season off to a winning start with a 10–2 victory at Long Eaton B, followed by a much closer home match against Nottingham B which Ashby won 7–5.

Wed 30th May: Long Eaton B 2–10 Ashby B.  Eileen reports: Derek & Eileen Buxton and Peter Richards played the first match of their season against Long Eaton B. Long Eaton had phoned to say that the weather was awful but we decided to play.  The rain dried up and we played under overcast clouds.  The score was a 10–2 win to Ashby, but the result does not represent the play of the Long Eaton team, as all games were hard-fought.  We were rewarded with an excellent lunch and good company. A good time was had by all.

Sat 2nd June: Ashby B 7–5 Nottingham B.  Richard reports: Derek & Eileen and Richard Sanville played a very closely-fought match against Nottingham B.  Nottingham were 3–1 up after the first two rounds, but the lunch break at that stage seemed to revive the Ashby team, and we won the next two games to level at 3–3.  Four of the remaining six singles games went to the deciding 13th hoop, three of these ending in Ashby’s favour including the decisive game between Derek and Mary.  Derek was the star Ashby player, winning 4 of his 5 games.

The Ashby C team’s first match was a 6–6 home draw against Bakewell B.

Coors Cup and Bass Shield double for Sheffield U3A

Sat 26th May, Moira.  Report by Ray

The 2018 Bass Shield and Coors Cup event was well supported with six East Midlands Federation teams represented. Neither Sheffield U3A nor Branston U3A had entered previously. The teams were divided into two blocks. In Block A, Sheffield U3A won all 12 of their games and in Block B Long Eaton had 9 wins and a draw. In the afternoon the two block winners each won 3 of their games with all six players adding another win to their tally. So with 5 players (all except Joan) on 5 wins, a shoot-out was needed to decide both the individual and team events. Players were given 3 balls to shoot from the boundary to hoop 5. Peter Reed and Joan Skuse ran the hoop with two balls and David Bills scored one. So Sheffield U3A secured the Bass Shield and the Coors Cup went to Peter Reed. A clean sweep for the Sheffield team.

Bass Shield: 1st Sheffield U3A; 2nd Long Eaton
The play-offs between the other teams resulted in the following placings:
Ashby 3rd, Leicester 4th, Branston U3A 5th, and Darley Dale 6th.

Coors Cup winner: Peter Reed (Sheffield U3A)

It is pleasing to report that all players won at least one game and everyone enjoyed the event.
