E Mids GC Div 3: Ashby C 10-2 Bakewell B

The C-team, of Pete M, Jeff and Ray L, had a very successful match against Bakewell B, winning 10-2.   Everyone found the new hoops, combined with dry ground, very challenging.  The games were more competitive than the score suggests and Bakewell enjoyed their day out.

Andy Sherwood wins the Ashby A-Level GC tournament

After a few late withdrawals and replacements, we had a field of eleven players in the all-play-all A-Level weekend tournament, with the top four progressing to the semi-finals.

In an all-Nottingham final, Andy Sherwood won 7-6, 7-5 against Alex Aiton.

John Picken (Ashby) and Christine Wood (Tyneside) were the other semi-finalists.

Ashby win the East Mids 14-point AC league

Ashby, Leicester and Nottingham contested this year’s East Midlands 14-point one-day AC competition for teams of three.

The competition was played as three rounds of games, each round comprising four singles games with a time limit of 1hr 45 mins. With an odd number of players overall (3 x 3) this meant one player had to sit out each round. By the end of the day, each club had played a total of eight games.

The final result was as close as ever, with Ashby (Keith, Arthur and Richard) finishing as winners with 5 wins, followed by Leicester on 4 wins and Nottingham on 3 wins.

The last game of the day to finish, between Richard Sanville (Ashby) and Tom Dewar (Nottingham), was really tight and could easily have gone either way but in the end Richard held on to a narrow lead to claim the win. Had Tom won this game, all three teams would have finished on the same number of wins and Leicester would have won the trophy on hoop difference, thanks to an outstanding day’s play by their star player Owen Pugh who easily won all his games well within the time limit, conceding just 4 points overall.

E Mids GC Div 2: Two 6-6 draws for Ashby B

Ashby B’s two latest league matches have both finished in 6-6 draws, firstly the away match against Southwell B on Fri 3rd July, with Ashby B represented by Paul S (making his debut), Ormond and Colin C. Then on Mon 6th July Ashby B (Paul S, Ormond and Richard S) drew in a home match against Nottingham A.

Kate wins the Perry Bowl ladies’ tournament

For this year’s Perry Bowl we had six great ladies. The weather was good to us. It was overcast in the morning and sunny in the afternoon.

The first round was a fast one for Jayne and Julie Smith, only 25 minutes, with Jayne winning. Avril’s games were the last to finish in all rounds!

After round 3 Kate, Pat and Jayne all had 2 wins each.

After round 4 Kate and Pat had 3 wins each.

Round 5: Kate vs Jill, and Kate gets her 4th win. Well done! Pat vs Julie, and Julie has won that one.

So Kate Ibbitson has won the Perry Bowl with 4 wins.

Pat Barnes and Jayne Smith finished joint runners-up with 3 wins.

Julie Smith and Jill Goodall finished with 2 wins, and Avril York 1 win.

Well played to all of you and thank you to Lesley for doing the afternoon for me.

Roger Watson wins Ashby’s National Forest AC tournament

Eight players, mostly from Nottingham, contested this event in fine and mostly sunny weather. The Egyptian scoring meant that there were three games which could yield a winner going into the last round, but in the end Roger Watson emerged undefeated over the weekend to claim the trophy and a well deserved handicap reduction to 1.5.
