The Northern Stars is a new GC competition this year. There have been five one-day heats taking place in Northern & Midland-based Clubs. Ashby hosted one of these heats in May. They give players an opportunity to play against a top player. Each heat had two winners: the overall winner and then also the player who had gained the most index points, called the Challenger. Although neither won the Challenger at Ashby, John Picken and Judith Rowe qualified for the Challenger finals because of the index points they gained in the heat.
The finals were held at Bowdon, and there were four winners:
the overall winner of the Championship (Euan Burridge)
the winner of the Championship bowl (Ian Burridge)
the player who gained the most index points in the Challenger (David Beddy)
the player with the most wins/biggest hoop difference in the Challenger event (John Picken)

Judith would have won the wooden spoon with no wins but she was happy to take three players to 6–7 who had handicaps much lower than hers.
