Peter Tofield wins the Ashby One Day Open GC tournament

We had a full entry of 12 players from six different clubs for the second Ashby One Day Open GC tournament, many of whom had played in it last year.

The two blocks were won by Tim King (Ashby) and Peter Tofield (Northampton), both of whom did not drop a game. Andy Sherwood (Ashby) clearly took second place in block B, but block A was a much more closely-fought affair with Mark Buckley (Leicester) just edging Nick Saxton (Cheltenham) out of a place in the knockout.

Both 19-point semi-finals were close, with Tim and Peter eventually winning out. Peter won the final 10-6 against Tim. Andy Sherwood won the 3rd/4th playoff and Les Heard (Wrest Park) the plate.

Mike O’Brian, who initiated this tournament, was on hand to present the two trophies that he has designed and made especially for it.

As well as wonderful weather, we were treated to a fly past by a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial flight organised for the nearby Canal Festival at Moira Furnace.
