Secretary’s Shield semi-final: Middlesbrough 4-3 Ashby

Sat 11th August, Middlesbrough

Arthur reports that the morning doubles was Ashby’s best chance of a fourth game win but it wasn’t to be. It took Ashby a while to adapt to the slow lawn pace, with Andrew & Dennis getting to penult and peg whilst we were still on 4 and 1 back. Arthur & Mick then got to peg and 2 back before the Middlesbrough team hit in and finished.

Heather played solidly to secure two wins, but Mick was the only other Ashby player to get a win in the singles.

Report by Dennis Scarr:

The match was played against the backdrop of 150th year celebrations of the opening of Albert Park, Middlesbrough which has Middlesbrough  Croquet Club lawns at its centre.

Sunshine, a carnival atmosphere, a good number of bisques and friendly rivalry produced a close match with Middlesbrough running out winners 4 games to 3.
