The last couple of Sunday tournaments before Christmas were cancelled due to snow on the lawns, but it all thawed out in time for our New Year’s Day doubles tournament which was contested by a good field of eight pairs including a few of our Long Eaton visitors. As usual, Martin paired players according to handicaps to try and make the games as even as possible, which worked well as many of them finished 7-6 or 7-5.
Everyone’s croquet was bolstered, or maybe in some cases hindered, by a particularly impressive array of goodies on the buffet table including some tasty hot soups.
Rachel and Ray were the overall winners of the Dave Davis Cup, winning all three of their games despite Ray nursing an injured foot. Will and Jenny finished runners-up on hoop difference.
